Mixing & Mastering Tip #207 ·
Spectre's De-Emphasis mode for low end, and why I moved from BassXXL
If you’ve been in the mixing game for a while, you’ve probably bumped into the usual suspects for beefing up low end: RBass, BassXXL, MaxxBass. And you know I’m always testing them.
I’ve used them all. RBass was my go-to for years.
BassXXL? On some projects, it really shines.
But lately, I’ve been hooked on something different for the low end: Spectre.
Spectre’s De-Emphasis feature
I know you’ve seen Spectre around before. But here’s the part most people don’t realize: it has a sneaky little feature called De-Emphasis.

By default, it’s off. Turn it on, and magic happens.
You can boost a frequency range and pick a “bass type” color, but instead of cranking the actual fundamental, you’re just adding harmonics. That means more body, more beef, more character, without making your low end boomy or muddy.
Why this is sometimes better
- Full palette of colors: Spectre gives you different harmonic flavors. Each one has its own vibe.
- Flexible control: if you do want to boost the fundamental and the harmonics, just disable De-Emphasis. Easy.
- Clean results: unlike BassXXL, Spectre doesn’t smear your sound when filtering.
The problem with BassXXL
Yes, it allows you to boost harmonics or the fundamental separately. But the filtering isn’t transparent. With steep slopes, you start hearing smearing. Why? Because it’s not linear phase.
How do I know? Zero latency. You can’t have a linear phase filter with zero latency. And there’s no option to switch it.
So what happens? Sometimes it’s subtle, but if you’re working with kicks that need to be tight, punchy and snappy, even just turning BassXXL on can mess with your transients.
