Mixing & Mastering Tip #184 ·

Why self-releasing your music might be the smarter career move

One of my favorite parts of running my private mentoring group is bringing in real-deal guests.

Recently, we had the legend Cloverdale stop by, one of my all-time favorite house producers, and he dropped a gem that resonated with many:

“Don’t be afraid to self-release your music.”

Let that sit for a sec. Because this advice goes way deeper than just uploading a track to Spotify.

1. Take full ownership

Cloverdale didn’t just mean “release it yourself and call it a day”. He meant own the whole thing:

  • Your brand.
  • Your spending.
  • Your vision.

From start to finish, it’s yours. Make it look and sound amazing. Fully match it with your artistic vision.

And when you build something that’s fully yours, guess what? You also keep the full reward.

2. Stop chasing labels

Too many up-and-coming artists are stuck in this mindset: “If I get signed, I’ve made it.”

But let’s be real: getting signed is not success.

There are so many micro-labels now that don’t even have a real identity. No direction. No consistent vibe. Maybe you’ll get some plays here and there, but are they going to be your real fans?

What about bigger labels? The reality is that they are not as successful and meaningful as they were before, and the real power now lies in the hands of the artists.

Big labels are no longer just signing “artists”. They’re signing the artists’ audiences. Because that’s where the real money is, and labels are a business, not charities.

So why not start building a real audience instead of keeping your music unreleased, waiting to be signed?

3. Look pro, get taken seriously

If you treat your self-release like it’s coming from a top-tier label, nobody’s gonna question your legitimacy:

  • High-quality artwork.
  • Smart rollout plan.
  • Clear brand vision.

Booking agents will notice, A&Rs will notice, and you will feel that confidence too.

On a final note

In today’s landscape, quality plus intention is the real flex. Not who signed you.

If you care deeply about what you’re building, from the sound to the visuals to the message (and you invest in some promo), you’re going to stand out. Period.

So if you needed a little nudge to bet on yourself, here it is: release that record. And take full ownership.
