Mixing & Mastering Tip #192 ·
Why you should never start a mix without the artist's rough mix
This one is for you, engineer.
If you usually start your clients’ projects without a rough mix or self-mix from the artist, I hate to break it to you, but you’re making a huge mistake.
You might be thinking: “But I’ve got the stems. Do I really need the rough mix?”
The answer is 100% yes. Here’s why.
1. Stems don’t tell the whole story
Even if the stems are clean, they often don’t sound anything like the rough mix.
Why? Because a lot of people add extra processing on the mix bus: EQ, limiting, saturation, you name it. Sometimes it’s so much that it rebalances the entire mix.
So if you’re only working from stems and skipping the rough, you’re missing the artist’s original vision completely.
2. The rough mix is what the artist loves
It’s what they’ve had in their head for weeks or months. Their ears are used to it, their brain is anchored to it.
Even if it’s not “technically perfect”, it’s the vibe they want.
So if the stems don’t match the rough, step 1 should be: make your session sound as close to the rough as possible. Then start making decisions from there.
Some artists come unsatisfied with their mixes and are really open to changes, but I wouldn’t say that’s the usual situation.
Mixing without a rough is like being blindfolded
Let’s flip it around. You get the stems. You start mixing. No rough mix. No references. Just vibes.
Guess what happens? 99% of the time, you end up with a mix that’s way off from the artist’s vision. Which leads to endless revisions, or worse, getting replaced.
Perspective is everything
So sometimes you might have to make a choice that’s not 100% “technically correct”. But if it keeps the original vibe alive and makes it sound more pro, that’s a win.
The rough mix is your blueprint. Disregard it, and you’re flying blind. But if you study it, match it and build on it, that’s when the magic happens.
