How to prepare a clipped digital master for vinyl when mixes are gone
One of the most common questions I get is: “What do you do when a client wants a vinyl master, but the only files left are the digitally mastered releases?”
Recently, a client reached out to me about an album he released almost a decade ago. The goal was simple and clear: make it sound good on vinyl.

There was just one problem. The original mixes were gone. No stems. No premasters. No alternate versions.
The only files available were the final, clipped and heavily mastered songs.
Vinyl hates square waves
If you’ve worked with vinyl before, you already know the challenge.
When audio has been pushed too hard into limiting and clipping, those flattened peaks can make life difficult for the cutting engineer. The more aggressive the clipping, the harder the groove has to work.
So what can you do when going back to the mix isn’t an option?
Unsquaring the audio with an analog chain
There are several ways to “unsquare” audio. But one of my favorite approaches is a little different: running the material through real analog tubes and transformers.
Why? Because the process does much more than simply soften the clipped peaks.
The analog path naturally introduces subtle phase shifts, gently reshapes transients and adds a unique coloration that often helps the music feel more organic and less constrained.
The result isn’t a perfect recreation of the original dynamics. But it can move the material away from that harsh, brickwalled look and sound, while giving the entire album a cohesive character.
And as a bonus, it makes the cutting engineer’s job much easier.
What the waveform shows

Comparing the original clipped master with the signal after the analog chain: the original has heavily squared-off peaks, and after the chain the waveform becomes more rounded and natural looking, with less of that “brick” appearance.
Small change visually. Big difference when preparing a record for vinyl.
No access to the real gear?
Try playing with some filters in the box. Carefully selected, good-quality filters can shift the phase of your song, “unsquaring” those clipped peaks.
